VOLUNTEER NEEDED FOR VILLAGE OF WESTPORT AUDIT COMMITTEE
The Village of Westport needs a community member for the position of
Independent Citizen on the Village Audit Committee.
Villages in Nova Scotia have a significant degree of public accountability and
must establish an Audit Committee. The Audit Committee members provide an unbiased look at the Village finances, the way they are being reported, and advise if there are any concerns with the annual audit.
Requirements for an Independent Citizen to serve on the Audit Committee:
- You’re a permanent resident and landowner on Brier Island, and you’ve resided full-time one year prior to applying for the position of Independent Citizen;
- You’re not related to the Commissioners or Employees;
- You’re available to meet between two and four times per year;
- You’re financially literate;
- You’re able to commit to a term of three years; and
- You’re willing and able to complete five online training modules, and become familiar with the document FRAM (Financial Reporting and Accounting Manual, a publication from Municipal Affairs and Housing amplifying the Municipal Government Act, Sections 451 and 420).
What will you do as the Independent Auditor as part of the Village Audit Committee?
- You will review the financial statements of the Village with the Auditor;
- You will evaluate internal control systems and any management letter with the Auditor;
- You will review the conduct and adequacy of the audit;
- You will investigate such matters arising out of the audit as may appear to the audit committee to require investigation;
- You will review such other matters as may be determined by the Commission to be the duties of an audit committee; and
