Minutes Westport Village Commission
Call to order: 6:30 p.m.
Attendees: Gordie O’Neill (Commissioner); Trevor Moore (Commissioner); Shelley Lonergan (Commissioner); Cheyenne Peterson (Clerk/Treasurer)
Additions to Agenda: Brainstorm fundraiser ideas; Turning Community hall into possible Museum; Finalized Budget Review and Approval; Correspondence from community members.
Adoption of Agenda: Motion to adopt from Shelley, Trevor seconded the motion.
Previous minutes review: Minutes from March 5th, 2024 village meeting and minutes from March 27th, 2024 emergency meeting were reviewed and adopted. Motion to adopt from Shelley, second motion from Trevor.
- Monthly financial statements:
a. March Financials 2024: Motion to adopt from Shelley, seconded motion from Gordie.
b. ADDITION: Budget approval for the 2024-25 year, Shelley motioned to adopt, Trevor seconded. - Old Business:
a. Comm Hall doors and locks/reparis/replacement: Gordie is in contact with South West Glass is coming down this month at no cost to replace the locks on the new doors and will leave the keys with a commissioner before leaving.
b. Electrical Work Rec Hall & Comm Hall (including ceiling fans from fire department): No word from previous electrician. Community member suggested a more reliable business, Gordie to get in contact with Done Right Electrical and talk with Shawn Hudson to see about getting the repairs fixed and completed.
c. Rec Hall Dehumidifier: Has not been purchased as of yet due to it not fitting into our current budget, but will have to get regardless as it is needed.
d. Ambulance Purchase: The thought of purchasing an ambulance is back on the radar. It is noted that EHS has been doing well in keeping an ambulance at the bay along with a crew but that is subject to change. Clerk is going to set up a GoFundMe/Fundraiser for the MFRs in the Westport Fire Department to help with the purchase of the ambulance and with newer medical equipment.
e. Life Rings on Wharves: Shelley has gotten approval from Penney so she is just waiting on the ring. Gordie is still waiting to hear back from Cookes Aquaculture.
f. Banking access for Clerk: Still working on getting a date set that works for everyone.
g. Job Opportunities (Handyman posting): No resumes or interest shown as of yet. Clerk to make up job postings for garbage, snow removal, and mowing. - New Business:
a. Follow up on March 27th emergency meeting (SUBJECT-CATTLE): Shelley wrote another letter and the response was that someone was to be down on Monday. The Municipality of Digby hand-delivered a 14 – day order to get the fence done. It has been noted that the individual has gotten rid of two of the bigger cows, which leaves 3 of the smaller ones. An inspector has been down and has said that the fence is done and looks good to them, therefore there’s nothing more we can do other than keep writing the municipality every time there’s an incident. During the meeting it was noted that the cows were out that night, Gordie mentioned that he would take the pictures to the Municipality on Wednesday.
b. Correspondence: Two letter were read during the meeting. One was from the Westport Recreation Auxillary and the other from Sean McDormand. The Westport Auxillary requested a donation towards their Old Home Weekend taking place this July. Commissioners agreed to donate $300 towards the event. Sean McDormand brought up the deterioration of the trail to Seal Cove trail wondering if the Village was responsible for the upkeep or if we could put money into fixing it. He also brought up an idea of the Village building a lookoff point for tourists. Due to budgeting cuts, the Village can’t start any
major projects this year, they can only proceed with needed repairs and maintenance.
